Ancestral Recall #12: Torment Retrospective

It isn’t as long as Odyssey, but since it’s a small set, it’s got a lot of content. People namedropped include John Rizzo (and the runner-up in Magic rant artists, Geordie Tait), Zvi Moshowitz, and Randy “Macho Man” Savage. The initial imitation goes bad after a while, but the second one is JUST right.

Macho Man is easily one of the most mockable voices in wrestling, but that’s part of the fun!

News Update video

If you were a subscriber, you probably would have already seen this.

Between large amounts of writing for my upcoming exams and more work, oh yeah, and drafting, I have spent almost all of my free time sleeping. Shooting will happen this evening, and tomorrow’s my editing day. Stuff better be up by Sunday evening, or I’ll feel bad about it.

The master set review sheet does exist, but anything I give scores to has to be tenative, because I haven’t focused THAT hard on it. I’ll probably reconsider my scores when I get around to producing the show on that set.

But now you get retroactively applied scores to my older shows. You’re welcome.

The thing about it is, when it comes to sets, I only feel like reviewing sets with new cards in them. So Duel Decks, or old precons, or supplemental sets… well, if I really feel strongly about them, I’ll talk about them, but they’re not on my sheet. Core sets, I won’t talk about them until we get to M10. Why? Because they didn’t have new cards in them!

But the stats do have a strong trend to them. And it may surprise you that this dinosaur may say this, but in my view Magic has gotten a lot better over time, and the old days weren’t all that rosy. I do love some elements of older sets, but I think the game’s sweet spot only came about around its second decade. So if you think this show’s got rose colored Urza’s Sunglasses, think again. Tempest is a spike upwards, but it takes a while to get back to that level.

State of the show #2

Just a few notes, I’m doing a lot of multitasking and want to collect my thoughts here.

The next two shows I’ll do are Torment and Judgment.  I might interrupt those for a retro deck tech, but it depends on whether I can get the animations right or not.  After that, I’ll probably go back to Masques or forward with Onslaught.

I want to do a series on seminal decks, decks that will teach you fundamental strategies and improve your play by understanding them as archetypes.  The list needs work.  And that’s why I am asking you guys for help.

Trix is a good example of pure combo, Miracle-Gro is an aggro-control deck, Zvi’s My Fires is a classic aggressive deck with lots of opportunities to outplay opponents, Sligh has to be discussed, and Caw-Blade might be a good example of a classic Control deck.  Or I might go with Weissman’s  “The Deck”, the only deck that has the distinction of having the most ambiguous deck name ever.

I’ll probably put this at the end of the next video as a short message.

Episode 11 update

Hey, guys.  The script for episode 11’s done.  It took a long time to write, and it’s got two separate story segments.  It’s going to be longer than the Dark or Invasion episode, and probably should clock in at 15 minutes.  I decided that I’ll go back to Masques block at a later date, and move forward and do Odyssey block in sequence.  Highlights include predicting the winner of a Pro Tour during round 10, a story involving Magic’s most notorious Pro player of all time, and squirrel jokes.

Update:  Shooting’s done, and after judicious editing I cut it down to 26 minutes.  I need to add captions and images, but it looks good.  It should be up for Friday or Saturday.  I dug out a really neat Japanese item that I’ll show off. I also show off the show’s namesake.

BNG box opening notes

I shot this at midnight, as soon as I could legally acquire boxes of BNG.  I probably went at too slow a pace for most viewers, as I talked about every uncommon and rare I opened.  But if you want to see a show where I don’t use a script, well, here you go.  I’ll post a link to the video as soon as it’s done.  (It is taking a long time to upload, but that makes sense.  It’s more than double the length of my longest video.)

As you can see, I have lots of verbal hesitations.  That’s one of the reasons I use a script. ^_^

The first one’s the public one.

The second one’s the secret ninja video I added for subscribers only.  And now you’re privy.

Not a bad video, but not quite as many gags as I’d like.
